The benefit cap and under occupation
The benefit cap is a limit on the total amount of benefit you can get. It applies to most people aged 16 or over who have not reached State Pension age.
New rules for Housing Benefit were introduced in April 2013 for working-age people living in a property with more bedrooms than they were entitled to.
Some claimants will have their Housing Benefit reduced as a result, and will have to make up the shortfall themselves.
This is sometimes referred to as the:
- Bedroom Tax
- Under Occupation Penalty
- Removal of the spare room subsidy
